| The
children's program is structured to teach children self-defense
by teaching them principles in Aikido that require little
or no strength.  Techniques; are taught to
children in an easy to learn format focusing on 2 principles;
the mechanics of the technique and applications to the
technique taken from real threats found on the street
such as muggers or child molesters. Children are taught
the most important lesson of how to say "NO"
to strangers with conviction and be able to fight back
if necessary.
We teach students
in a fun environment while they learn discipline over
their minds and bodies. They are taught about
respect for their peers and also for the martial arts.
Many training methods are used including belt promotion
and occasional games that students use techniqes to
"win" the game. Group instruction allows children
to work with their peers, however attention to individuals
allows students who are struggling with a concept
to understand a technique. The Kids program at NYMAG
is taught by Sensei Earl Layumas.
